Memorial services for Phillip Monson, 86, of Blue Earth, formerly of Frost, were December 10, 2010, at Dell Lutheran Church, rural Frost, with burial in the Dell Cemetery. Phillip died December 6, 2010, at his home.
Phillip was born August 12, 1924, at Brush Creek, Minnesota, the son of Edward and Marie (Amundson) Monson. He attended the rural Monson School and graduated from Frost High School in 1942.
Following high schook, he farmed briefly before entering the U.S. Army during World War II. He served with the 508th Military Police Battalion and was proud to have helped liberate those detained at the Buchenwald Concentration Camp in Germany in 1945. Following the war, he returned to Minnesota and farmed.
He married Sonia Vatvik September 5, 1953, at Dell. They farmed for many years near Frost, where he was a mbmber of North Blue Earth and later Dell Lutheran churches. He was active in the Faribault County Historical Society, St. Luke's Lutheran Care Center Board, Midland Coop Board, the Bricelyn American Legion and Blue Earth VFW and several other organizations. For the past several years he attended Trinity Lutheran Church in Blue Earth.
He is survived by his wife, Sonia Monson of Blue Earth, two sons, Martin (Angela) Monson of Florida and Andy Monson of Frost, by one daughter, Anita (Troy) Beckman of Plymouth and by five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Elwood Monson, twin sister, Phyllis Burns; brother-in-law, Bob Burns; and a sister-in-law, May Monson.
